My dad and I created a cabaret in 2013 called ‘One Tacky Tree’. It was about fathers and daughters and the relationship between them. I had to write lyrics, look at a budget and write some of the script. Then we put it on for the general public and it was such a great experience.
At the start of year eight our school held a special project. We could do the project on whatever we wanted but to. We had to be thorough and it had to have a written component, an artistic component and an oral component. We had 4 months to do it and we had to have a mentor. I decided to do my project on costume and set design
I had to pick a subject I was interested in and make a specialist newspaper on that subject. For me that subject was musical theatre. I decided to do a page on interviews with popular people in Melbourne’s musical theatre. So I wrote questions for professional performers Chelsea Gibb and Michael Dalton and emailed them. I also went to New York in May last year where I saw lots of plays and musical theatre, so I wrote reviews of some of my favorite ones.
In 2014 two other girls and I created a cabaret called “The Mysterious and Altogether Suspicious Disappearance of the Extremely Strange and Very Shy Fred.” Quite the mouthful! It was about an imaginary friend that we made up and could not find! It was great and super fun to get to collaborate with other young people.
I went to New York in May last year and it was the best experience of my life. I got to see lots of amazing theatre; I got to visit ‘New Dramatists’ which is where playwrights go to have their plays work-shopped and so forth. I met lots of intelligent people who have heaps of experience in the theatre. I learnt a lot about the theatre.
